Webster Statesmen win Douglass High School Night to finish Undefeated League season

Douglass High School was the only accredited school for black people in St. Louis county from 1926-1956 when it was then demolished after the end of segregation in 1957.

When the Statesman has their Douglass nights, they wear the Douglass Panthers purple jerseys in honor of the former school that was also located in Webster Groves.

For the Douglass night game, The 20-5 Statemen faced the 17-7 Marquette Mustangs.

The two teams faced off earlier in the season on 12/28 at Maryville University, and the Mustangs came out victorious in their first matchup. Would the Statesmen even the score in the second faceoff between the two teams?

After the second quarter, the score was 28-27 with Webster leading by one going into the half. It looked to be a matchup that would go down to the wire at that point.

But, after a second half scoring explosion by sophomore Scottie Adkinson (#11) the Statesmen pulled away with a 74-60 victory.

The scoring leaders for Webster Groves on the night were Scottie Adkinson with 41 points, and Miles Simpson with 14.

The leading scorers for Marquette were Brody Owen with 28 points, and Jack Punty with nine points on the night.
